Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Sets ESG Benchmark With Global JCI Sustainability Distinction
In a landmark achievement for Indian healthcare, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute has secured the Certificate of Distinction for Healthcare Sustainability from Joint Commission International (JCI) and the International Hospital Federation’s Geneva Sustainability Centre. The hospital is now the first in India and the fifth globally to meet this international sustainability benchmark.
As healthcare ranks among the top five global carbon-emitting sectors, the need for resilient, climate-conscious hospitals is growing. Kokilaben Hospital’s recognition aligns with rising global expectations under frameworks such as TCFD and ISSB, which emphasize climate-risk disclosures and sustainable operational practices.
Highlighting the significance of the recognition, Dr. Santosh Shetty said:
“The certification reflects our core belief that sustainability unlocks both better clinical outcomes and stronger operating performance. Our 2030 Sustainability Roadmap focuses on energy efficiency, water stewardship, low-emission materials, and climate-resilient infrastructure. These investments are designed to reduce long-term cost pressures, improve patient safety, and strengthen business continuity in a city facing increasing climate volatility.”
The certification acknowledges hospitals that integrate environmental governance, emissions management, waste reduction, water conservation and sustainable supply chains into enterprise risk management. It demonstrates Kokilaben Hospital’s commitment to robust internal controls and long-term operational resilience.
In India, where climate vulnerabilities are rising sharply, this recognition is timely. Climate-linked disruptions could cost South Asia up to USD 36 billion annually by 2050, placing enormous pressure on public health infrastructure. National initiatives like the NPCCHH are nudging hospitals toward sustainability, but widespread adoption is still developing.
Kokilaben Hospital’s JCI certification places it at the forefront of this transition, setting a model for climate-ready healthcare in resource-stressed settings and elevating ESG standards across the sector.
