Axis Bank bets on digital lockers amid rising urban demand

With India facing a sharp shortage of bank lockers, Axis Bank has launched a digital locker-focused branch in New Delhi to tap into rising demand.

Industry estimates suggest nearly 6 crore affluent Indians will need lockers by 2030, compared to an existing supply of about 60 lakh, creating a major gap in urban centres.

The branch, inaugurated by M. Nagaraju and Ashok Tyagi, is designed as a compact, tech-enabled facility within a premium residential ecosystem.

It enables 24×7 access through biometric authentication, removes dependency on branch staff, and ensures privacy through automated locker delivery systems.

Mr. Amitabh Chaudhry said, “At Axis Bank, our focus on customer obsession drives a culture where we anticipate the evolving needs of our customers and design innovative solutions to address them. As customers seek greater control, transparency and convenience in safeguarding their valuables, our Digital Locker–focused branch reimagines the experience by placing access, privacy and security firmly in their hands, supported by advanced technology. This proposition reflects our intent to build a more embedded, ecosystem-led banking model aligned with modern, urban and premium lifestyles. It brings to life our vision of a future ready branch network built around how our customers live, work and bank today.”
