“I did some films where my heart didn’t belong”, says Yami Gautam

Yami Gautam Dhar has as many as five projects arranged for release, and the actress shows no indication of slowing down. In any case, she asserts that this no way implies that she has or would sign for anything that comes her direction. Her decisions today, she says, are vasty different from those of the past.

She says, “I have evolved a lot as a professional. I have understood ‘what’s going to work for me’ versus ‘I need to or should do this because that is what works’. Also, the opportunities are different, and my own perspective too.”

She shares, “I came with a very substantial perspective, that’s why I started my career with Vicky Donor (2012). It’s not possible then that your career will not see those dips and lows, what’s not working for you. I reached a point where I am firm about the idea that no matter what kind of film it is, I need something really substantial to do. I am not using the word stronger, but substantial, it has to have substance in it. That’s what will take you ahead in the longer run,”

Having said that, the actress admits that she made choices which weren’t substantial and in hindsight she believes she shouldn’t have taken up.

“But even at that time, maybe those were the best opportunities I got, I chose the best out of those. It seemed to be not correct, even then I was aware this is not something where my heart belongs to, or what I have come to do in the industry. I will respect those people for giving me work at that time, it was still work at the end of the day,” she says, adding she still respects it all.
