Serbia names Novak Djokovic in the team for ATP Cup next year

Serbia has announced their team for the men’s season-opening ATP cup in January in Sydney, and surprisingly the team includes the name of Novak Djokovic.

The draw for the third edition of the ATP cup was held on Tuesday, and the Serbian team was seeded in the Group A of the tournament. Their group also features the likes of Norway, Chile, and Spain.

After this draw, the real question remains unanswered: will Djokovic play in the Australian Open, which is also due to start in January?

Earlier, the Serbian international declined to openly reveal his vaccination status ahead of the year’s first Grand Slam. The organizers of the Australian Open have revealed that all players taking part in the tournament will be required to be fully vaccinated. The Melbourne government will personally monitor that every player taking part in the game follows the COVID guidelines.

However, there is another option that allows a player to compete in the tournaments in Australia. According to reports of Reuters, the Australian Government has created a policy under which the organizers of the tournament can apply for an exemption for unvaccinated players. Following which the players will have to spend 14 days in mandatory quarantine before joining the tournament.

The Australian Open’s organizers, however, declined the exemption. This means that to participate in the first Grand Slam of the year, the world number will have to reveal his vaccination status.
