Google invests $1 million in African indie game developers

Sub-Saharan Africa is rapidly becoming a hub for gaming, driven by its rich storytelling traditions. Despite the immense potential, there’s a noticeable lack of investment for developers in the region.

To bridge this gap, Google is launching the first Indie Games Fund on the continent. With a commitment of $1 million, 10 promising local game studios will receive support to expand their operations and connect with audiences worldwide.

Each chosen studio will benefit from financial awards ranging between $50,000 and $200,000. Additionally, they will have access to dedicated mentorship and hands-on technical assistance.

The initiative invites indie game developers from Sub-Saharan Africa who have developed games for mobile, PC, or console platforms to apply. Interested developers can check eligibility requirements and submit applications through the website. The deadline for applications is set for noon UTC on July 31, 2026.
