Manu Rishi Chadha Channels Pervez Musharraf with a Touch of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Wisdom in ‘Operation Safed Sagar’

Manu Rishi Chadha has been sweeping up praise for his riveting portrayal of the former Pakistani President and Army Chief, Pervez Musharraf, in the intense drama Operation Safed Sagar. As the shrewd military strategist behind the Kargil War, Chadha’s portrayal captures the essence of a leader embroiled in history’s pivotal moments.

Speaking to PTI, Chadha revealed that his journey into Musharraf’s persona began with diving deep into YouTube archives, unraveling the gestures and speech patterns of the enigmatic leader. Yet, it was the sage advice from the acclaimed Nawazuddin Siddiqui that truly illuminated his path. Operation Safed Sagar, inspired by the Indian Air Force’s daring efforts during the 1999 Kargil War, follows the courageous Golden Arrows Squadron. As these young fighter pilots soar through high-altitude missions, they confront not just the enemy, but also the profound emotional toll of war.

The dynamic ensemble cast features talents like Jimmy Shergill, Siddharth, Abhay Verma, Adil Hussain, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin, Amrita Bagchi, Dia Mirza, and Prajakta Koli. Chadha shared, “Musharraf was a real person, but my first concern was understanding the written material about him and his demeanor. YouTube became a treasure trove, offering insights into his mannerisms and voice. It was crucial for me to feel comfortable in his skin.”

Thanking Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Chadha recounted a pivotal interaction, “While on YouTube, I found intriguing content. Meeting Nawazuddin was serendipitous—I was narrating a script to him and seized the chance to ask about his approach to playing (writer Saadat Hasan) Manto. He said, ‘Without a visual reference, I leaned on Nandita’s (Das, director) vision, trusting my instincts to see if it resonated with my heart and mind.’ That advice shaped my portrayal.”

Meanwhile, Netflix is set to unfold the legendary tale of the MiG-21 fighter jet with The Last Salute. Directed by Kushal Srivastava, this documentary delves into the MiG-21’s storied 62-year journey with the Indian Air Force, featuring insights from Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh and veteran pilots. The Last Salute premiered on Netflix on August 26, adding another layer to the captivating saga of aviation history.
