Novak Djokovic named in the entry list for Australian Open
A new twist has taken place in Djokovic’s Australian Open saga. Following intense speculation about his participation in the first Grand Slam of the year, his name was revealed on Wednesday, as the entries for the tournament were named out, reports AFP.
The Serbian star had earlier refused to answer any question regarding his participation and his vaccination status. This row came into existence after the organizing authorities of the Australian Open mapped out the COVID-19 guidelines. According to those guidelines, only vaccinated players could partake in the tournament. Earlier, Djokovic was also named in the Serbian team for the ATP CUP, which will precede Australian Open.
While a huge name has been included in the tournament’s prowess, another Star has withdrawn from participation. Veteran women tennis player Serena Williams has decided to pull out of the tournament citing medical reasons. In her statement, she said, “while this is never an easy decision to make, I am not where I need to be physically to compete.”
The 40-year-old has been stranded on 23 career Grand Slams for a long time now. She is just one slam away from equalling the all-time record which is currently held by Margaret Court.
