The Heart Condition Doctors Rarely See in Someone This Young

At 21, most young mothers are focused on raising their children, building their future and managing the challenges of everyday life. The last thing anyone expects is a life-threatening heart condition.

For a young woman from Solapur, however, what began as occasional chest pain, breathlessness and fatigue gradually turned into a medical emergency that could have claimed her life.

For nearly a year, she experienced symptoms that she believed were linked to stress and physical exhaustion. As the symptoms worsened, she eventually sought medical help. What doctors discovered was alarming.

Tests revealed that the patient’s aorta, the body’s largest blood vessel, had expanded to 6.8 centimetres—nearly three times its normal size. Such an enlargement significantly increases the risk of rupture, a complication that can lead to sudden death within minutes.

She was admitted to Sahyadri Surya Hospital – A Network Hospital of Manipal Hospitals, where a team led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Manoj Durairaj performed a complex life-saving surgery.

“Such a condition is extremely uncommon in someone so young. Her aorta had enlarged to a dangerously critical size and was at imminent risk of rupture. Immediate surgical intervention was essential to save her life,” said Dr Manoj Durairaj.

The medical team performed a Bentall Procedure, a highly specialised surgery involving replacement of the damaged aortic valve, reconstruction of the aortic root, replacement of the enlarged aorta with an artificial graft and reconnection of the coronary arteries.

“Surgeries of this nature carry significant risks, including excessive bleeding, stroke, and other serious complications. However, thanks to meticulous planning, surgical expertise, and the advanced medical infrastructure available at Sahyadri Surya Hospital, the procedure was completed successfully,” said Dr Shantanu Shastri.

After a successful recovery, the patient was discharged on March 30 and has since resumed her normal life with her family.
