Ashes: Alex Carey set to make his Test match debut
They say that one’s lack is another’s opportunity, and it has definitely turned out to be the case for Alex Carey. The stepping down of Tim Paine from the position of Australia’s captain, followed by his indefinite break from the game, has opened a slot for Carey to make his debut in the longest format of the game.

As the first test in the 2021/22 Ashes series draws nearer, the clouds of uncertainty have started parting. After a long and tumultuous month for Australian cricket, things are finally becoming clearer. The appointment of Pat Cummins and the appointment of Steve Smith as the vice-captain solved the leadership woes for Australia. Now, the news of Carey making his debut takes care of who will be their man behind the stumps.
Carey said, “I am incredibly humbled by this opportunity. It’s an exciting build-up for what is a huge series ahead. My focus is on preparing and planning my part in helping Australia secure the Ashes,” in conversation with RSN radio.
Carey has found his place above Josh Inglis, who was backed up by several greats of the game, including Shane Warne. However, his domestic season has not quite gotten off. He has only managed to score 153 runs in his 8 Sheffield Shield matches. His last five innings in that tournament have been curtained in single digits, which is a woeful sign. He scored a much-needed century in the Marsh Cup though, which will give him adequate confidence heading into the Brisbane test.
