Former Indian player Laxman Sivaramakrishnan opens up about his experience with racism in India

As the racism scandal that rocked the English Cricket board takes center stage worldwide, many people are coming out to reveal how they have had an experience similar to Rafiq. Another addition to this list of racially abused players is India’s famous wrist-spinner turned commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan.

Reacting to a Twitter post talking about the incredible expertise on spin bowling that Laxman possesses, the commentator wrote, “I have been criticised and colour discriminated all my life, so it doesn’t bother me anymore. This unfortunately happens in our own country.” Sivaramakrishnan represented India in 9 test matches and 16 ODIs and was known for his excellent control over the flight and spin of the ball.

In recent years Sivaramakrishnan is not the only player who has opened about his experience with racism in India. Earlier in 2017, Tamil Nadu opener Abhinav Mukund talked about how too, at several junctures of his life, faced the same issue. In a Twitter post, Mukund wrote, “…Ever since I was young, people’s obsession with my skin colour has always been a mystery to me.” Last year, Dodda Ganesh, another south Indian player from Karnataka, also opened up about his experiences of racial discrimination.
