Premier League: Steven Gerrard returns to Anfield

Former England and Liverpool midfielder turned manager Steven Gerrard is all set to make his return to Anfield. Gerrard spent most of his career at the Merseyside club and will return to the ground after almost a 6-year gap, albeit not as a player. He will be taking his Aston Villa side to Anfield for the first time as a coach on Saturday, and the sentimental value of this return is palpable for both fans and Gerrard.

Gerrard definitely had the best time of his footballing career with the club, with which he won a total of 17 trophies in his almost 17-year long career. Hence it only makes sense if the player feels emotional about returning to the ground, donning different colors than the Liverpool red.

Being the manager of Aston Villa, Gerrard cannot let the sentimental aspect of the return overwhelm him. And addressing the same issue in the press conference before the game, he said, “the noise is for the other people to get excited about. For me, it’s about preparing the team in the best way I can, to try and get a positive result for Aston Villa.”

Since he arrived at Villa Park, Gerrard has considerably impacted the team. At the initial stage of the season, what looked like a mid-table finish for the Aston Villa has been turned around dramatically. Heading to the season’s halfway stage, Villa stands at the 10th position on the table with 19 points from 15 games.
