Sourav Ganguly reveals reason behind Rohit Sharma’s appointment as ODI captain
BCCI’s decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI team has caused quite a stir around social media. Several allegations are being raised against the board for sacking one of the most prolific captains they have ever had.
Amid this row, the BCCI president and former Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly decided to clear some air regarding Rohit Sharma’s appointment. In an exclusive interview with TOI, Ganguly said, “The board and selectors had asked Virat to rethink his decision to quit T20 captaincy. He had declined the suggestion at the time. The selectors were uncomfortable with the idea of having two captains for white-ball cricket.” he further added, “It was not going to be easy to have two captains in White Ball Cricket with two World Cups in two years. The selectors felt the team needed one vision and varied styles of captaincy could disrupt the planning.”
Concluding his statement, the president clarified that Kohli was kept in the loop with all the decisions that were taken. Ganguly also assured that Kohli is in a good space and will always remain a part of the leadership group following this decision. Simultaneously, he will continue to lead the team in the game’s longest format.
Rohit Shama will take the baton from Virat Kohli as the captain of the ODI team next year when India takes on South Africa for a three-match ODI series.
