Travis Head scores 100 in final session to put Australia in a stronger position at end of day 2
What’s better than watching a good competition between bat and bowl in a test match? The answer is watching a batter dominate a game in which bowlers have been on top. That is precisely what Travis Head did in the third session of day two as he took all the English bowlers to the beaches to score the first hundred of the series.
The English bowlers had two average sessions earlier in the day, but they made a remarkable comeback to remove not one but four Australian batters in the third session. It was the dismissal of Warner that opened the floodgates, and it was followed by Greene, Carey, and captain Cummins.
However, none of it perturbed a determined-looking Travis Head who stuck to his job of scoring runs at a quick rate. Head had a slow start to his inning, but he picked up pace nearing his fifty. Batting with the new skipper Cummins, Head scored the majority of runs in their 70-run partnership. He also brought up his fifty during the same partnership.
Cummins later was removed by his opposite number in the form of Joe Root. Head carried on, though, as he strung together another partnership of 37 runs with Mitchell Starc to take his team’s lead past the 190-run mark. And above everything, he brought up his third Ashes hundred in just 85 balls. In his dynamic inning, Head scored 12 fours and 2 sixes.
