UEFA calls off the match between Tottenham Hotspurs and Rennes

The European football’s governing body has finally concluded that the match between Tottenham and Rennes will not be played. Initially scheduled to be played on Thursday, the match was postponed after the Premier League side reported COVID-19 infections.

UEFA released an official statement, in which they stated that despite several efforts, they couldn’t find the right spot to reschedule the tie. “As a consequence, the match can no longer be played, and the matter will, therefore, be referred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the competition regulations.”

The matter has been highly discussed because the Premier League club called off the match on the eve of the encounter. According to Antonio Conte, the Tottenham manager, the team had 13 confirmed cases. Eight involving the players and the rest among staff. Rennes, however, was not happy with the decision and has decided to use their right to appeal to UEFA. Even when they have qualified for the round of 16, Rennes wants this game to happen. Tottenham requires to grab three points off this game, as well as the goal advantage if they are to qualify for the next round in this tournament.

At the moment, it does not seem to be happening, as even their Premier League encounter on Sunday night also got postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the team.
