UEFA repeats round of 16 draw for Champions league following a technical error
UEFA was left embarrassed in front of the entire world earlier on Monday when a technical glitch created a miss-match during the announcement of the ties for the Round of 16.
Once the group stage of the UEFA Champions League gets over, the teams that have qualified sit glued to their TV screens to know which team they are to face in the next round. Since the tournament enters its knockout stages from here onwards, it becomes essential to know whom you are drawn against.
The draws are generally announced at random with the help of technology. On Monday, however, the technology failed UEFA as they ended up making a significant blunder.
In the first round of pairing, Manchester United and Villareal were tied against one another for the next game. According to the guidelines, this cannot occur since both the clubs had qualified from the same group.
As a result, UEFA was forced to redo the pairing. Commenting on the blunder, UEFA blamed “a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other.”
The reshuffled ties are as below:
Paris Saint Germain – Real Madrid
RB Salzburg – Bayern Munich
Sporting CP – Manchester City
Benfica – Ajax
Chelsea – Lille
Atletico Madrid – Manchester United
Villareal – Juventus
Inter – Liverpool
